Main Application

Used as nickel stripping agent in plating industry, rust remover of ship. Also used as resist agent for vat dye & sulfide dye, quality protectant of dye.

Sodium 3-Nitrobenzenesulphonate is an important aromatic sulfonated compound with the chemical structure featuring both a nitro group (-NO₂) and a sulfonate group (-SO₃Na) on a benzene ring. This unique combination of functional groups makes it highly useful as an intermediate in chemical synthesis across several industries.

1. Dye and Pigment Industry

Sodium 3-nitrobenzenesulphonate is widely used as a diazo component or coupling agent in the manufacture of azo dyes. Its sulfonic acid group enhances water solubility, while the nitro group contributes to chromophore development and colorfastness in dyed textiles and inks.

2. Pharmaceutical Intermediates

It acts as a synthetic intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. The compound’s nitro group can be selectively reduced to an amine group, allowing further chemical transformation into active drug molecules or biologically active compounds.

3. Electrochemical Applications

In electroplating and other electrochemical processes, sodium 3-nitrobenzenesulphonate may be used as a brightener or additive to enhance the surface finish and functional properties of plated metals, especially in nickel plating baths.

4. Analytical Chemistry and Reagents

This compound is also used in analytical chemistry as a reagent or reference standard due to its stability and reactivity in controlled chemical environments. It may assist in reaction monitoring or pH-sensitive formulations.

5. Polymer and Resin Modification

In polymer chemistry, sodium 3-nitrobenzenesulphonate can be incorporated into resin systems to introduce ionic functionality, improve dispersion in aqueous systems, or provide charge-balancing properties in ion-exchange materials.
