If you work in catalysis or ion-pair chemistry, you already know: quats are back in the spotlight. Over the last 18 months, demand has shifted from commodity TBAC to consistent-hydrate grades. Process engineers keep telling me they want dependable water content—no surprises in scale-up. That’s where tetrabutyl ammonium chloride hydrate has carved out a niche, especially for phase-transfer catalysis, ion-pairing in HPLC, and halide exchange workflows. Two things: reproducibility and supply. With tighter green-chemistry targets, many customers say a well-behaved tetrabutyl ammonium chloride hydrate can shave hours off aqueous-organic coupling steps. It seems that a stable hydrate level downgrades those finicky induction periods—surprisingly more than you’d expect. Materials: tributylamine, n-butyl chloride, solvent (controlled), neutralizing base, purified water. Method: quaternization → phase separation → solvent exchange → controlled hydration → recrystallization → vacuum polish-dry → ≤1 mm sieving → nitrogen-pack in PE-lined drums. QC: NMR/FTIR ID, HPLC assay, KF water (ASTM E203), chloride assay, APHA color, residual solvents (GC), LOD/LOD check (USP ). To be honest, the hydration step is where the magic (and headaches) happen. Advantages: predictable hydrate content, low color (cleaner downstream), tight residue specs, and packaging that actually survives humid summers. Customization usually covers hydration set-point (≈3%, 5%, or 7% KF), particle size (powder vs. pastille), and packaging (1 kg foil → 25 kg fiber drum, nitrogen-flushed). A recent lot I reviewed showed: assay 99.3% (HPLC), water 6.1% (KF), APHA 25, residual solvents ND, chloride content within spec—solid numbers. Documentation-wise, look for ISO 9001 QMS, CoA per batch, and if you need it, REACH statements. Store the tetrabutyl ammonium chloride hydrate tightly sealed; it’s mildly hygroscopic, so it will wander if you let it. Safety quick note: follow GHS/ SDS guidance; avoid strong oxidizers; PPE and good ventilation, as usual.Field Notes on tetrabutyl ammonium chloride hydrate in Real-World Production
