Main Application

It is soluble in alkaline solution, M is used as brightener for copper plating, which can brighten and level the deposit. Furthermore, it can improve working current density.

 

 

2-Mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) is a heterocyclic organic compound that contains both benzimidazole and thiol (-SH) functional groups. It is known for its antioxidant, metal-chelating, and corrosion-inhibiting properties, making it valuable in various industrial and chemical applications.

1. Corrosion Inhibitor

2-Mercaptobenzimidazole is widely used as an effective corrosion inhibitor for metals such as copper, brass, and steel. It forms a protective film on metal surfaces, helping to prevent oxidation in water treatment systems, cooling circuits, and industrial equipment.

2. Rubber Antioxidant

In the rubber industry, MBI functions as an antioxidant and anti-aging agent, especially in natural rubber and synthetic rubber compounds. It helps to improve heat resistance and durability by protecting rubber materials from degradation caused by oxygen, ozone, and heat.

3. Plastic and Polymer Stabilizer

MBI can be used as a thermal stabilizer in the processing of plastics and polymers, extending product life by minimizing degradation during manufacturing and long-term use.

4. Intermediate in Organic Synthesis

It serves as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, dyes, and agrochemicals, due to its versatile benzimidazole structure and reactive thiol group. It can be functionalized easily for further chemical transformations.

5. Lubricant Additive

2-Mercaptobenzimidazole is also used as an additive in lubricants and greases, enhancing their antioxidant and anti-wear properties, particularly in high-temperature applications.
