Sodium Ethylenesulphonate is a water-soluble organic salt with the structure CH₂=CH–SO₃Na, containing a vinyl group and a sulfonate group. Its unique combination of reactive unsaturation (vinyl) and strong hydrophilicity (sulfonate) makes it a valuable intermediate and functional monomer across several industries.
1. Polymer and Copolymer Production
Sodium ethylenesulphonate is commonly used as a comonomer in polymer synthesis, especially in the production of water-soluble and ion-conductive polymers. Its sulfonic acid group imparts ionic conductivity, making these polymers ideal for use in membranes, hydrogels, and superabsorbents.
2. Water Treatment and Dispersants
Due to its anionic nature, it is used in water treatment formulations and as a dispersant additive in detergents and cleaning agents. It helps to prevent particle agglomeration and enhances the stability of suspensions and emulsions.
3. Textile and Dye Industry
Sodium ethylenesulphonate serves as a modifier in dye formulations and textile auxiliaries. It improves dye uptake and dispersion properties, especially for synthetic fibers, and can enhance washfastness and color uniformity.
4. Construction Chemicals
It can be used as a component in superplasticizers and concrete admixtures to improve flowability and workability of cement-based materials, while reducing water content and enhancing final strength.
